16 Fundamental Truths
Learn what the Assemblies of God church calls the 16 Fundamental Truths
Our world is forever changing. Change is common to all life on Earth. We are not today what we were yesterday and tomorrow everything will be different from what it is today. Like the world around us, much of what we do and say is transient and temporary.
But, there are a handful of things in life that never change--- nor should they ever change. One of those things in life that never changes is God. Malachi 3:6 says "I the Lord do not change...". He is the same yesterday, today, tomorrow and forever. Like God, His truth is also everlasting.
God's truth stands alone as a single constant in our dynamic, ever-changing and shifting cultural values and secular beliefs. The truths of God that never change are His word. They are recorded in the world's best selling book, the Bible. These truths are the very foundation of successful and happy living.
The General Council of the Assemblies of God was formed in April of 1914. The first couple of years of the Assemblies of God consisted of printing a paper to carry reports of the ministry, establishing a fund for supporting the work of missionaries and formally credentialing ministers.
In 1916, the new fellowship saw a need to establish a set of doctrinal standards, due to some churches who were performing baptisms 'only in the name of Jesus Christ', which of course was unscriptural. The teaching spread quickly. At stake in the still young Assemblies of God was the danger of leaving the Trinitarian (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) ranks of Christianity, creating further isolation from other Christian groups and setting sail on the ill winds of biblical error.
In this context, the young Assemblies of God quickly realized the need for outlining some essential standards of truth that would help navigate the church on a truly biblical course. In St. Louis, Missouri, in 1916 the Assemblies of God established sixteen (16) doctrinal standards called the Statement of Fundamental Truths. These standards have withstood the test of time and have served the church well. However, no claim is made that it contains all biblical truth, only that it covers our need as to these fundamental doctrines.
In First Corinthians 1:10 Paul says "I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought." It is in this spirit, so that there are no divisions among the church, that these 16 Fundamental Truths were forged.
The following statements are essentially the same as established in 1916. Only minor adjustments in wording and clarification have been made since then. Sometimes such a statement of fundamental truths for a denomination speaks more to people who study Theology, than it does to the average man or women in the pew.
The following statements express the fundamental doctrines of the Assemblies of God in non-theological terminology. We desire that every man, woman and child understand the truth of Scripture as did our predecessors who searched the Bible, composed the following statements, experienced its truth, and left it to us as a precious heritage. The following sixteen fundamental truths are the non-negotiable beliefs that all Assemblies of God churches adhere to.
